Hi Bill, cool blog! I am an occupational Therapist with over eleven years of experience with elderly and physically disabled and am interested in the possibility of moving to CR with my husband in the next two to three years. Do you think there are opportunities for setting up long term care or home health businesses for elderly people to enable them to remain at home and fit and independent and if not, what are my chances of getting work in one of the hospitals? My husband drives a truck but may be on disability by then as he has Multiple Myeloma. We are looking for a simple way of life to enable us tto spend more time together while he is able to enjoy things. How would you rate the Caja system for cancer treatment as he would not qualify for any private health insurance due to his pre existing medical condition.
Thank you in advance, Kim

I'm not really sure what the exact cost for a school year is for each student but I'd like to suggest the creation of a national lottery for the express purpose of providing all that is necessary to those whose families do not meet the financial income threshold for basic school requirements.
" I was personally at the humanitarian exercise and most of the eye and hernia operations performed within the operating rooms of the U.S.S. Iwo Jima were referred in advance by the Costa Rica CAJA medical system."

Thank you American taxpayers...proof that the USA is directly subsidizing the socialist Costa Rica CAJA...which is perpetually broke...just like all the other socialist healthcare systems..

Hey, how's that "We ain't got no army" working out for ya??? The facist Nic's are violating Costa Rica territory and not a dang thing Costa Rica can do it about...cuz it ain't got no army!!

Better hope Obama keeps gas in those US Army helicopters in Honduras, huh???

You Americans living in Costa Rica on social security..you are SAFE living there BECAUSE of American military forces in Panama and Honduras and the U.S. Coast Guard off the coasts of Costa Rica.

admit it, you love the US military when it is deployed around Costa Rica. Otherwise you would be having conversations with Nicaraguan and Cuban commandos....

A couple notes...

CAJA MRI

The Costa Rica healthcare system (CAJA) does not have MRI capability at the time of this writing. Obtaining an MRI within the CAJA requires special permission to obtain the exam outside the system at a private hospital ... a process that is not encouraged due to costs.

Older and less expensive in-system CAT scans generally require a 12 month wait. An "emergency" CAT scan order can be completed in as little as 2 weeks.

U.S. Military Humanitarian Aid

The U.S. "humanitarian" mission in Costa Rica was highly criticized as a public relations ploy to gain support and a continued foothold in Central America. Just the other day the statement; "and what do they want in return" was made during a discussion about this same event.

Without getting into politics - which are always in play; I was personally at the humanitarian exercise and most of the eye and hernia operations performed within the operating rooms of the U.S.S. Iwo Jima were referred in advance by the Costa Rica CAJA medical system.

"All residents of Costa Rica are members of the social healthcare system (Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social – CCSS). This system is adequate for most purposes, but heavily burdened. Wait times for appointments to see a specialist or receive an MRI in non-emergency situations can be 12 months. Non-critical surgeries can take years."

SOCIALISM NEVER WORKS...you eventually ALWAYS run out of other people's money (Margaret Thatcher)

Without the USA's kick ass military, Costa Rica would have been overrun by Cuban Communists decades ago. Panama Canal is crawling with US Military and that keeps things humming.
REMEDIES FOR FRAUD IN COSTA RICA

Unfortunately, many foreigners who purchase real estate, autos, other products

and services are defrauded here in Costa Rica. I too, a nine year resident of Costa

Rica, have been a victim of fraud, but I am one of the few lucky ones who was able

to successful win my claims in the legal system here.

One has to be objective. There are many honest ticos, Costa Ricans, but there

are also many ticos and foreign residents who will take advantage of a foreigner, and

defraud their clients of serious amounts of money, sometimes their entire life´s savings.

The victims of these frauds, in many cases have the odds seriously stacked against them.

The perpertrators of these frauds are very intelligent. They are well aware that their clients.

in many cases, have little knowlege of the language, customs and most importantly, the

legal system. They also know that they can make arrangements, in many cases, with

victim´s attorney to make the victims claim go away. It is a double pay day for many

attorneys. It is not uncommon for a dishonest attorney to receive legal fees from the victim

and a second fee from the defandant so that the claim is put in limbo.

Speaking from my experience, I have had very, very difficult experiences with many of

the attorneys I have been involved with. Chorizo, bribery, is commonplace in many, but

not all, situations here in Costa Rica. On the other hand, the judiciary system, is far less

corrupt due to the fact that all judges are subject to strict review. If judges engage

illegal decisions, and if you are lucky enough to have an attorney to follow only your interests

completely, you have an excellent chance of success in a financial remedy. The judicial

review board is very strict. A judge that hands down illegal decisions, if pursued, loses

his job.

One of the problems here is that almost no lawyers work on a contingency basis. Not all,

but may lawyers here want to extract their fees for the most amount of money in the least

amount of time. This is totally contrary to the interests of the plaintiff.

I have had the very good fortune or luck to have been able to work with attorneys who were able,

not only to get back my investments, but damages well in excess of the amounts for which I

had been defrauded. They worked with me, and are working with me strictly on a contingency

basis. You pay nothing. You only pay a percentage of your claim when they win your claim.

I would be happy to offer whatever input I have to help anyone who has been defrauded here in.
